The 2026/27 Championship brings together three clubs relegated from the Premier League and a group of established second-tier challengers. West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers drop into the division after Coventry City won last season's title with 95 points and Ipswich Town secured the second automatic promotion place.

Three relegated clubs reshape the promotion race

The relegated teams will attract immediate attention, but their Premier League status does not guarantee a quick return. The Championship's schedule, physical demands and short recovery cycles punish unsettled squads.

West Ham have one major point of continuity: captain Jarrod Bowen has committed himself to the promotion campaign. They must, however, replace Mateus Fernandes after his confirmed move to Tottenham. Burnley have lost defender Maxime Estève to RB Leipzig, while Wolves have begun rebuilding with the signing of winger Saïd from Standard Liège.

The early question is therefore which relegated club turns its resources into a coherent Championship team fastest, rather than which has the most familiar names.

The continuing contenders

Last season showed the standard required. Coventry combined 95 points with 97 goals, while Ipswich held their nerve on the final day to go up automatically. The clubs left behind now have a clear benchmark.

Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney is one established player to watch after being named the 2025/26 Championship Player of the Season. He recorded five goals and seven assists, evidence of the midfield influence that can separate a play-off contender from an automatic-promotion push.

The Championship is also particularly vulnerable to late-window change. A leading scorer or creator leaving in August can alter a team's prospects more sharply than one marquee arrival suggests.

The cup supplied a more useful final check

The first competitive weekend made the relegated clubs look rather different. Wolves beat Port Vale 3-0, a tidy result that suggests their attacking rebuild has at least started on schedule. West Ham beat Portsmouth 3-1 and carried Jarrod Bowen's decision to stay into a positive first result.

Burnley's evening was less convincing: a 1-1 draw with Notts County before progressing 4-3 on penalties. It is too early to turn that into a crisis, particularly after a summer in which their defence changed, but it gives predictors less reason to assume an effortless start.

Elsewhere, Norwich and West Brom both won 4-1, Sheffield United beat Mansfield 3-0 and Stoke won 2-0. Those results do not settle the promotion race. They do, however, offer a firmer starting point than a friendly played with two different elevens.

What this means for your predictions

The Championship rewards caution. Relegated clubs can begin with strong squads but uneven confidence; established contenders can have better tactical continuity; and the transfer deadline arrives after competitive matches have already supplied new evidence.

For August predictions, consider the venue, recovery time and confirmed team news before relying on reputation. Track whether West Ham convert Bowen's commitment into momentum, whether Burnley settle defensively and how quickly Wolves integrate Saïd. Just as importantly, look for last season's near-miss clubs that have retained their core.
