Championship Gameweek 3 is complete. The 12 fixtures on 28–29 August 2026 produced six correct result calls, including one exact score, and six misses for Jim. Wrexham–Birmingham opened the round on Friday; the remaining 11 matches finished on Saturday.

The summaries were updated on 14 September to reflect the completed round. The table, form analysis and match previews retain the evidence available before kickoff; the prediction publication dates and scores have not changed. Jump to the final review or inspect the recorded results.

What mattered this gameweek?

This round showed why the Championship resists broad reputation-based picks. Birmingham converted a narrow away lean at Wrexham, but Norwich and Southampton overturned Jim’s away calls with emphatic 4-1 and 5-1 home wins. Swansea’s 3-0 victory at Derby and Wolves’ 4-1 win over Stoke also made goal-margin assumptions as important as direction. The official Derby report confirms Swansea’s away success, while Southampton’s five-goal review captures the strongest home response. Jim finished with six correct result directions from 12 matches, including an exact Blackburn-QPR score. That is useful evidence, not proof that the same teams can be trusted next time: the division’s short turnarounds, uneven squad changes and frequent close games demand a fresh check of venue, recent result and confirmed availability before every new ScoreSocial deadline. Goal totals also need their own judgement rather than inheriting the favoured result.

Gameweek 3 results and conclusion

Birmingham City won 2-1 at Wrexham on Friday. Saturday finished Derby 0-3 Swansea, Middlesbrough 3-1 West Brom, Wolves 4-1 Stoke, Blackburn 1-2 QPR, Bolton 0-1 Lincoln, Bristol City 2-1 Portsmouth, Cardiff 2-2 Sheffield United, Charlton 1-0 Preston, Norwich 4-1 Burnley, Southampton 5-1 Millwall and Watford 1-1 West Ham. The finals were reconciled against ScoreSocial's API-Football-backed fixture record; Derby's official report and Southampton's official five-goal review confirm two of the day's headline results.

Jim landed the exact Blackburn-QPR score and the correct result direction in Wrexham-Birmingham, Derby-Swansea, Wolves-Stoke, Cardiff-Sheffield United and Charlton-Preston. The completed round therefore closes with six correct result directions from 12 fixtures, including one exact score. Norwich and Southampton's emphatic home wins were the clearest misses against the published away calls.

The EFL's official Championship results page provides the first competitive reference: Birmingham drew at Sheffield United, Wrexham drew with Cardiff, Wolves and Blackburn shared four goals, while Millwall, QPR, Charlton, Middlesbrough, West Brom and Watford began with wins.

Early table and form context

One completed league match does not make a reliable table. Goal difference can separate clubs sharply after 90 minutes, and the Gameweek 3 pairings include teams with very different opening results. The useful approach is to note what happened, then check whether the same strengths survive team changes and the short turnaround.

Jim's v3 evidence remains classed as thin for every fixture. That is why the predictions below use narrow margins and state the home/draw/away split instead of presenting a score as a fact.

Match-by-match preview

Wrexham v Birmingham City

Both started with draws, making Friday's deadline match a genuine low-separation fixture. Birmingham hold the model edge, but neither first result supports a bold margin.

Derby County v Swansea City

Derby need a response after losing at Charlton, while Swansea arrive from a win. The contrast supports the away direction without turning one match into settled form.

Middlesbrough v West Bromwich Albion

Both won their first league match. That makes this meeting more informative than either isolated result and leaves the away call deliberately low confidence.

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Stoke City

Wolves' 2-2 draw with Blackburn showed attacking output and defensive risk. Stoke lost at Swansea, and v3 gives Wolves the strongest home probability on the card.

Blackburn Rovers v Queens Park Rangers

Blackburn scored twice in their opening draw. QPR scored three away at Portsmouth, which is the stronger current clue behind a narrow away selection.

Bolton Wanderers v Lincoln City

Bolton beat Preston while Lincoln lost at Middlesbrough. Venue and the opposing opening results create one of the clearer home directions in the round.

Bristol City v Portsmouth

Both lost by two goals. This is a response test rather than a reason to trust either defence, so the model-led away call still needs late team news.

Cardiff City v Sheffield United

Cardiff drew and Sheffield United opened goalless. The evidence points to a close contest, with a draw remaining a serious alternative to the 0-1 pick.

Charlton Athletic v Preston North End

Charlton beat Derby and now host a Preston side that lost at Bolton. That combination supports the medium-confidence home direction.

Norwich City v Burnley

Norwich lost at home to West Brom, while Burnley drew 2-2 with West Ham. Burnley's two away goals provide the clearest current reason for the 0-1 call.

Southampton v Millwall

Southampton lost at Watford and Millwall won 2-0 at Bristol City. The two results align with v3's away direction, although the evidence is still only one match per club.

Watford v West Ham United

Watford opened with a win. West Ham already showed they can score twice away from home, so the model's home edge is kept to the smallest margin.

ScoreSocial fixture predictions

editorial-score-v3 blends the API-Football signal with Scorebot. The 28 August calibration review now anchors the expected goal total to Championship scoring evidence before allocating it between the teams, then selects a representative credible score rather than defaulting every marginal result to 1-0 or 0-1. Wrexham v Birmingham is preserved unchanged because its kickoff preceded the review.

FixturePredictionV3 evidence and editorial read
Wrexham v Birmingham City0-1H 25% / D 36% / A 39%; xG 0.90–1.10. Both drew; Birmingham hold only a low-confidence edge.
Derby County v Swansea City1-2H 21% / D 36% / A 43%. Swansea's win and Derby's defeat support the away direction, with the revised total allowing both teams to score.
Middlesbrough v West Bromwich Albion1-2H 21% / D 36% / A 43%. Two opening winners meet, so a narrow scoring away win is more representative than 0-1.
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Stoke City2-0H 52% / D 35% / A 13%. Wolves scored twice while Stoke opened with defeat, supporting the clean-sheet home margin.
Blackburn Rovers v Queens Park Rangers1-2H 24% / D 37% / A 39%. QPR's three-goal away win supplies the stronger clue, while the two-point edge over the draw keeps it close.
Bolton Wanderers v Lincoln City2-0H 52% / D 35% / A 13%. Bolton's win and Lincoln's defeat support the clearest home clean-sheet call.
Bristol City v Portsmouth1-2H 22% / D 36% / A 42%. Both lost; the away direction remains model-led but the revised total no longer assumes a home blank.
Cardiff City v Sheffield United1-1H 26% / D 36% / A 38%. Editorial override: only two points separate away and draw, making 1-1 the better expression of the uncertainty.
Charlton Athletic v Preston North End2-0H 53% / D 35% / A 12%. Charlton's opening win supports the medium-confidence home direction and a two-goal expectation.
Norwich City v Burnley1-2H 23% / D 36% / A 41%. Burnley's two away goals and Norwich's defeat support a narrow scoring away pick.
Southampton v Millwall0-2H 18% / D 36% / A 46%. Millwall's clean-sheet win supports the stronger away direction and a second goal.
Watford v West Ham United2-1H 49% / D 36% / A 15%. Watford's opening win keeps the home direction, while West Ham's two goals make a reply credible.

Team news and H2H guardrails

No complete official absence list covers all 24 clubs at the 27 August fact check. Club press conferences and confirmed squads are the final source. Historical head-to-head records can describe a pairing, but promoted clubs, summer recruitment and a new season make old meetings weaker than current availability. The official EFL programme and ScoreSocial fixture IDs were rechecked without a postponement being shown.
